The Costs No One Counts

The visible ledger shows what's given. The shadow ledger shows what's lost. Today, we begin naming the invisible costs — the ones that register in your body, your dreams, and your sense of self.

Psychoanalytic Insight

Carl Jung taught that the 'shadow' contains everything we've repressed. The shadow ledger holds the costs you were never allowed to name: the resentment, the exhaustion, the buried parts of yourself.

ENRICH Reflection Hertiage

Nationality — If you immigrated from a country where survival was precarious, you may carry invisible survivor's guilt: 'Why should I rest when they suffered?' Your exhaustion feels indulgent. But you are not obligated to suffer because others did.

Reflections

What have you given up that no one in your family acknowledges?

What feelings do you suppress to maintain your role as giver?

If you could bill your family for invisible labor, what would the invoice look like?

What parts of yourself have you hidden to remain acceptable?

What would you do with your time if you had no family obligations?

Embodied Practice

Close your eyes and scan your body. Notice any area that feels tired, tight, or numb. Place your hand there. Say: 'I see you. I know you've been carrying something unnamed.'

Cultural Context

The concept of 'emotional labor' describes work that goes uncompensated and unnoticed. In many families, one person becomes the designated emotional laborer. This work is invisible because it's expected to be natural, not labor.

Today's Affirmation

The costs no one counts still count. My invisible labor is real.
